Things to Remember When Moving

When you move, know that you will unpack in this order:
1. Toilet paper
2. Pots, pans, dishes, food
3. Toothbrushes
4. Beds

Everything else can wait a few days while you take stock of your surroundings. And with a little determination, a week without internet, and a box cutter, you can eliminate half of the towering cardboard stacks in your living room, especially if you already know where your tools are so you can reassemble your furniture.

It takes more than a week to get the stale smell out of your living quarters, but less than a day to get used to it.

When packing, WRITE DOWN WHERE YOU PUT THE REMOTE. This will save your sanity when you unpack.

As you fill the last boxes, don't leave things behind that you think you can easily replace. The more easily you think you can replace them, the more headache-inducing it will be.

Number your boxes. Label them thoroughly. Keep a list. Check it twice. Then, perhaps, you won't lose any boxes in your transfer between residences. Also, write down the stuff you got rid of as you got tired of packing, because after you move, you'll be convinced you're missing a box, despite the checklist, because you can't find such-and-such thing. Such-and-such thing is probably happily living at someone else's house, having been shuffled through the local thrift system.

We like our new apartment. We really like our new ward--they're very friendly, and very small. We'll be needed here for sure.

The Hub's job is going well--he's been in training all week, and that's all I know. He'll have to post about his new job himself.

And there you go. We're happy, we're healthy, and we had to buy a new remote. The end.

We moved once. I mean, my own little family. But we weren't even a family - just married, almost. I had furniture. Some furniture. If we had to move now, the numbers on the boxes would run into four figures. And I know I'd be tossing stuff in after about the 20th box, to heck with order or categories or sorting or rooms. I'm sure I'd be throwing all of them (except the toilet paper) into the basement (because I'm not moving unless I get one) for Another Day.

Yikes, I hate moving.

Congrats on making it through the move. Now that we're on the other end of it, I think, "Well, that wasn't so bad..." But, I know I don't want to do it again any time soon. Sorry about the remote. We've been here for about 2 1/2 months and I *just* found the popcorn popper last week. Who knew that packing it with the family room items was a good idea back in December? At least we know where it is now...

Love the list and your last comment. That says it all! Glad you survived, and hope you don't have to do it again for a while!

Glad to hear you survived and that you're settling in. If the housing market ever recovers and we're able to sell our house and move someday, I'll remember your advice!

Hey at least you could replace your remote. Adam's funky tv/vcr/dvd combo thing has a VERY special remote that you can't find any where on the internet (cuz the thing is oldddddd) and you can't use a universal remote cuz of the combo thing. Oh and 8/10ths of the functionality of said tv can only be accessed WITH the remote. And our remote was missing for 5 solid months.... yeah I was *this close* to buying a new TV for christmas when I found the stupid thing.

But either way I'm way happy for you that you have internet and found the remote and the tools and all those other important things. And that you like your apartment and your ward. Those are both muy importante.

Rip the bottom off your couch to see if that's where your remote is. That's what we did and by doing so we finally found our phone that had been missing for five months.

I don't EVER want to move again.

And the order of unpacking is GOLD.

Good advice from someone who has done a lot of moving! glad things are working out in your new ward. Doesn't it feel nice to be needed? We have found a house in Chandler, just waiting to be pre-approved to get moving on it!

I seriously had intentions on doing all of the things you listed. and then it all got thrown into boxes and thrown into a truck. Yup, everything is haphazhard. BUT we bought shower curtains and garbage cans, packed towels, left the pillows flying about in the truck, and plan on eating out. Awesome.
