Courtesy of a fabulous online friend, I've scored a couple of freelance jobs this year. The paycheck will be showing up soon and I have some decisions to make. I got a little too enthusiastic in my wardrobe purge and have very little in the way of non-casual clothing. (Oops.) Thrift stores abound in this area, so I should be able to make up the gaps quickly. At first I was going to sew all my clothes, but I've realized lately this is not a practical path for me--I don't have the patience to finagle the small details into something worth wearing. Well, unless it's an A-line skirt, but those aren't so hard, y'know? And purchasing the material makes it about as expensive as buying it new.
On the other hand, there are a few entertainment items I want. For instance, the newest BBC version of Sense and Sensibility. Or this kids' CD (fabulous piano work). There are a score of books I could happily add to my personal library, such as the rest of the Terry Pratchett Discworld series, and a few other albums I'd be happy to own, or even the Kung Fu Panda DVD for the entire family.
The sensible side of me tends to pop up and say evil things like "You could really use some bathmats for the bathrooms" or "Pay down your debts!" or "Save it for a rainy day" or "You could buy a new OS for the Mac for that amount." I'm quite practiced at ignoring that side of me. (Yes, our Mac is still ailing.)
Maybe I should talk this all through with The Hub. After all, we spend all the money he earns on things like rent and food and such. My paychecks are our fun money--he should have some say in where it goes.

In our house, bedtime is staggered a bit. We've found that if we give Miss Bubbly about a half-hour head start, she won't spend two hours talking to, playing with, or singing to her sister. (It ends up being more like 20 minutes.) Anyway, last night it was The Hub's turn to put The Eldest to bed. She'd talked us into playing a game of Sorry! with her--playing Sorry! with a tired 5-year-old takes FOREVER--so Miss Bubbly had been on her own for 45 minutes. The Hub says that as soon as he and The Eldest walked in, Miss Bubbly threw her blankets off her head and said slyly "I hid!"
We just wonder if she'd been hiding for the entire 45 minutes! Silly kid.

Ahh, the money dilemma. I say use part of it for something fun and the other part for something sensible. Clothing is always a good purchase, though. Just make sure it's a piece you LOVE so you'll wear it!
I would buy clothes in a heartbeat. It's nice to have a nice something to put on that makes you feel pretty. And it's not just for YOU. Mat can enjoy looking at you as well as enjoy your cheerfulness at feeling good wearing it. It's a win win! PLus you can't feel bad if you get it for a good deal.
Go for the clothes. Always, go for the clothes.
Yeah, yeah - I'd save it. Or pay it on debts. No fun, I know - but that's the way I did it, and now, we're out of debt. Just what you wanted to hear, right?
