Miss Bubbly had a sick stomach early early Sunday morning. She kept complaining about her stomach on Sunday and around mid-day she fell asleep, and just kept sleeping. Well, early this morning she got up, and wasn't breathing well. We thought maybe her stomach was still hurting and that she was trying to help it out by breathing shallowly.
Well, my very wise wife didn't let that go on too long before she decided to make an appointment with the doctor. They heard her breathing over the phone and told her to come in right away. According to The Momma it didn't take long for the doctor to determine that he didn't know what was going on, and that Miss Bubbly was in trouble. So The Momma, The Eldest, and very sick little Miss Bubbly took an ambulance ride into Ft. Worth to a children's hospital. On the way one of the EMTs checked Miss Bubbly's blood sugar levels, and sure enough she was in the stratosphere! Her levels were above 500, when a child her age and size should be no higher than 100. Miss Bubbly was in hyperglycemic shock.
I got the call from The Momma about 2 pm, in the middle of a session with a client, and that client was quickly shoved out the door. (I know it might sound terrible that I answered my phone in the middle of a session, but you have to understand my job and see how informal the sessions are.)
I got the hospital to find my little family in the ER, Miss Bubbly hooked up to all sorts of monitors and IVs. The Eldest was being very brave, and busying herself with a coloring book from the hospital. As would be expected, The Momma was very worried, but being strong for her girls.
We stayed in the ER for another hour and half or so, and then they moved Miss Bubbly up to the ICU. That is where she will spend the next 24 hours or so while they stabilize her blood sugars. Then she will stay another day or to in a standard room while they monitor her and teach us all about managing diabetes. She has been diagnosed with Type I diabetes.
Of course The Momma had left the van with the kid's car seats back in Bedford at the doctor's office (a good twenty minute drive from the hospital), and I had come in my little two seat truck. So I eventually had to leave my family, have my mom pick me up at our place, and take me to get the van so that I could go pick up The Eldest and bring her home.
I also made a quick call to my Elder's Quorum President (church leader) after trying several other people, and asked him to help me give Miss Bubbly a priesthood blessing. He was very kind to drive out and help me at a moment's notice, I now owe him some service time in the quorum.
My mom was very kind and brought some dinner with her that I could share with The Momma and The Eldest. We got to hospital at about nine, after visiting hours, did some smooth talking to get the EQP up to Afton's room, and gave her a priesthood blessing. President P------ then went home.
I stuck around while The Momma and The Eldest went to eat, since we weren't allowed to eat in the ICU rooms. Finally at about 10:00pm, The Eldest and I left for home and I got her into bed at about 11pm, and I am finally getting a chance to eat.
I'm sure you can expect a lot of updates in the near future about how our lives and diets are about to change forever.

Wow--what a crazy turn of events! I'm actually looking forward to hearing about what you learn as you embark on this journey.
I'm so sorry you are going through this! That must have been so scary for you guys. I hope you will find some peace in the next few days and that Afton will be stable and healthy moving forward. And as they say, knowledge is power, so the more you learn about diabetes the more you will be able to help Afton stay healthy. Please keep us posted on how things are going!
Hey guys,
wow. how crazy! Smart of Karie to not let things go too long. Good luck with everything and you're in our prayers.
Love,
Ginna
Good luck to you! Thanks for sharing your story!
Wow how scary!! I'm so sorry to hear about Afton's health. I can't imagine how scary that would be as a parent. You guys are great though and will help her manage her diabetes well. I'll be praying for you all.
How absolutely awful! I'm so sorry this happened to you all. I'm so relieved Karie got her medical attention before it was too late. I know the feeling of being dumped on with a lifelong medical problem for your little one and it isn't easy to take. It's absolutely overwhelming. I'm so sorry. I'll be praying for you all.
I hope Afton is doing better. We'll pray for you.
My prayers are for you too! Hospitals are scary places for a parent. I can relate a little--my daughter had a severe asthma attack that warranted a 2-day hospital stay. I know the knot-in-the-stomach feeling when, as a mother, you realize that your child is NOT ok and you don't know what to do about it.
Hugs!
This is what I get for falling behind. Holy Cats, Matt. Holy Cats.
