Our (temporary) youngest is growing up! Yep, Miss Bubbly turned 4 today. We would have had more fun if she didn't have to eat *all* her cake and *all* her ice cream. She is all carbed out for the week, I think. We and the diabetes team are still figuring out her insulin ratios, so she's been up and down today, blood sugar-wise, which really affects her moods.
BUT--she had fun in the meantime! We ate all her favorite foods (dinner was hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, and broccoli), watched her favorite TV shows, went shopping (one of her favorite activities), and went to the library. She opened her presents during dinner, and was very happy to receive some requested dress-up clothes (Robin Hood outfit and a COWGIRL outfit!), additions to her Little Pet Shop collection, a Dora the Explorer t-shirt from her sister, a medical play kit (including a fake needle to administer insulin to the rest of us), and a couple of Eric Carle books (Brown Bear and Polar Bear). All in all, she made out like a bandit.
This past year was rather quiet for Miss Bubbly, up until a month ago. She's progressed in her elocution--she's much more understandable (or at least I translate a lot less)--she recognizes all her letters and knows most of their sounds, has colors and shapes down pat, and can count to 15 mostly on her own. We love the Darnedest Things she says and I really should write them down more often, but she can really get us into the giggles at dinnertime with her off-the-wall comments. Her drawings are taking better shape too, especially with the recent addition of eyelashes to everyone's eyes.
Miss Bubbly's current favorite movies include The Little Mermaid, Toy Story, and The Incredibles. She loves singing the songs from Little Mermaid, and sometimes bullies The Eldest into singing with her. The Kim Possible movies have also surfaced as a recent favorite--it shows in her playing, in which I've had to step in and stop Miss Bubbly from practicing kung fu on her sister. She loves wearing dress up clothes, including princess dresses, and shiny things have a special place in her heart. She was excited to pick out her stainless steel medical alert bracelet with the heart-shaped diabetes tag and wears it happily.
Thank goodness for Miss Bubbly's cheerful, enthusiastic spirit. It gets us through the tough days where nothing is fun, and is epitomized by her loud announcement to everyone she meets: "I have diabetes!" I don't know what's in front of us, but I know that her joyfulness will carry us through it all. We're glad she's our girl!
