So I didn't blog last night and I got all busy today. Not that it's an excuse. But it is, because last night I had one of my migraines. Thankfully they only come a few times a year and all I have to do is sleep them off.
Anyway, today's entry is inspired by one of my very own Internet Friends, who was thankful for her internet friends yesterday. My first reaction was "Awww! We're friends!" My second one was "Oooh! I'm so stealing that idea!"
So.
I am thankful for my internet friends.
Or, as one of my other internet friends calls *her* internet friends, Imaginary Friends. You see, the majority of my internet friends I have not met in real life. On the flip side, I have gathered many real friends with whom I keep up on the internet. (Diagram that sentence!) So my personal line between Real and Imaginary blurs so much that it gets downright fuzzy and disappears in places. Then I toss in family members who blog. Quite the mental salad, I tell you! Or mental geometry problem. I need to move on and quit mixing my metaphors.
The internets have been my friends since 2002, when I first ventured into two message boards: EricDSnider.com and the WB message board for the tv show Gilmore Girls. I posted regularly on both of these boards once we moved to Sacramento--I had no job and Mat was gone working, so I found "real" people to talk to. Now that I have children, I turn to the Snider Board for grown-up conversation. They also have a tendency to discuss great topics and it's a safe place to be, since the Brothers Snider (Eric's brother Jeff runs the board now) set the standards high and there's no cussing or other crudities allowed. I left the Gilmore Girls board about two years after I joined because standards weren't quite as high and because the members there were rather antagonistic towards each other, dividing along liberal/conservative lines.
Anyway.
Through the internets, I have gained a few favorite friends. Actually, I've gained a lot of them--too many to list here. But they know who they are because they're
a) reading this blog
b) friends with me on Facebook
c) in possession of personal correspondance and/or gifts from me (especially an odd cross-stitched "GAF the Indomitable" that may have arrived in a birthday card a few years back).
I've had a great time with my internet friends, had a lot of introspective conversations with them, and found a new way of looking at the world just by knowing them. I'm incredibly grateful for that interaction and I'm especially grateful to Al Gore for inventing the internet.
The End

my students just told me about some guy who sold his imaginary friend on ebay. made a couple thousand dollars. ah, the internet. ;-)
Here's an imaginary hug. Glad we still keep in touch.
I'm so glad we are able to keep in contact through the interent. (even if I don't comment on your blog often, I'm reading.)
I actually wish we could have spent more time as real friends before you guys moved. How did I not figure out how much we had in common (a.k.a. how cool we are)until right before you moved? Uggh. Oh well. I'll settle for an internet friendship and our book club for now.
Heeheehee! That was a fun birthday, getting all those cards. Yes, hooray for the internets and Imaginary Friends!
But I'm your favorite EDS imaginary friend, right? RIGHT??
I love diagramming sentences.
Kerry--A couple thousand dollars, eh? I'll have to figure out which of my imaginary friends I like the least and give it a whirl....
Heidi--Hugs back to you.
Traci! You commented! I'm glad you read. I should comment on yours too.
Jayne--Ditto that! My dad's still out that direction, so we can set up yearly playdates or something. And make brownies! And talk about books, should it cross our minds.
Sara--Hooray for the internet indeed!
Abby--Of course you are! Or you would be, if you actually participated on the EDS board, which is now just The Snider Board, which you would be aware of if you participated more often. (Diagram that!) We miss you over there.
That's funny. I have many an "imaginary" friend too, mostly through my online book group who now all read each others blogs. Very cool.
I was over there for that writing contest book thingy, remember? It was brief and I was on a specific mission. I'll be back when the book comes out so I can plug it to the masses.
The Snider Board (excuse me) stopped being fun for me. It had stopped being fun for a while actually, but it finally hit me one day that I derived less enjoyment from going there than if I stuck a pencil in my eye, so I stopped going. But I still consider myself your EDS friend because that's where we met. So there.
And thank you for saying you miss me, but I just imagine you are one of maybe two people who feel that way. The rest of the lot hated me passionately so I figure I did them a favor. Merry Christmas Snider Board members!!
I hope your migraine went away. Those are rough.
